A National Institutes of Health-funded study, being conducted at Harborview Medical Center (Seattle, Washington), will look at the effect of Reiki therapy on fibromyalgia, a chronic muscle pain condition. In addition to muscle pain, fibromyalgia is characterized by headache, fatigue, sleeping problems, and psychological distress--and rarely responds to conventional medicine. Reiki (RAY-key), like Therapeutic Touch and other modes of energetic healing, directs healing energy to the patient. Dr. Mikao Usui developed the practice, which uses a set pattern of hand positions, in the late 1800s. Proponents say that Reiki is particularly effective in alleviating pain, stress, anxiety, tension, depression, and insomnia
